Storm Window: The Moth

The giant moth we saw between two windows,

trapped in a locked house, as we were walking,

stopped us a moment: how

it clung to the inner glass

impassively, moving its wings slightly

in torpor. It was like a mask in a case,

with two vast eyes that glowed

violet, rimmed with gold.

But ours was helpless love. So we went on

under the rain of maple seeds in the wind.

The heads of trees were exploding,

the attic windows swarmed

with many fragments of torn sky: shattered

peace and shattered forms driven across it.

Then, fired from ebony,

came random shots of the storm.

We cowered. But we ran with a strange joy.

Exhilaration, sudden death, in the air

and in our breasts were joined,

and the great moth we’d seen:

what had it been, a map that chance had drawn

of our world? It barely vibrated its wings

as if not to feel again

the narrowness of the space

where the wild, perfect pattern had an end.

In those wings, trembling, heavy, the moth bore,

hooded in dust and shadow,

every colour, every form.
